The marina is
just North of Birmingham. Mercia Marina is between Lichfield and
Burton-upon–Trent. Based on on the Trent and Mersey canal. The location
makes an ideal starting point for exploring the Birmingham waterways,
the Trent and Mersey Canal, Nottinghamshire, or Staffordshire
countryside, in hire barges.
Stratford on Avon, Stoke Potteries, Derby, Stourbridge or The
Black Country are also in reach.
The barge's leisurely pace gives time for exploration and appreciation
of the surroundings and your Narrow boat.
Places like Tardebigge ( the longest flight of locks in the UK ) offer
challenges for those interested, while calmer almost lockless routes are
available for the less ambitious. Those wanting to commune with nature,
will welcome the way wildlife accepts the gentle intrusion of a drifting
Narrowboat. The option of quiet places, in which to enjoy a more

Take a little time, to marvel at the history and achievements of the
canal builders. Equipped with little more than shovels,
wheelbarrows and a large workforce. Their tunnels, locks and bridges are
a memorial to their hard work, determination and skill, and still tell
their stories.
You can moor free on the canal in the centre of Birmingham or many other
cities. The shops and nightclubs not so very far away, the Narrowboat
awaiting their return within a short distance and without the fear of
parking tickets!
Houseboats are permanently moored at Mercia Marina offering more
spacious accommodation in an idyllic setting.
All craft are managed and prepared to a high standard by
Shakespeare Classic line, who even provide a complimentary bottle of

Care should be taken to ensure at least 3 reasonably capable adults are
in the crew of an 8 berth craft, or at least 2 for smaller vessels, as a
certain amount of physical effort is required for locks. Good
supervision of children on the craft is also needed to ensure a safe and
happy vacation.
The Novice or Student Bargee will be aided by a short
familiarisation course prior to departure.
