The United Kingdom has something like 2000 miles of
canals as a
heritage from past industrial use, with very little commercial traffic
still in evidence.
In the last 50 years or so most of these waterways have been
refurbished by British Waterways and local Canal Societies to provide
a comprehensive and delightful network of waterways that cover most
of the country, primarily to be used for recreation.
Canal boat holidays are forever popular with several hundred hire
companies offering a vast arrange of different boat from traditional
to modern. Even horse drawn boats can be found as well as electric
boats to help preserve some of the more delicate environments. At one
time someone was offering a steam powered boat as well … but I don’t
know on what terms. If you cannot find a hire company to serve try a
times share rental such as www.canalbarge.co.uk they usually offer
reasonable quality boats quite cheaply
For those seeking a more comfortable holiday Hotels boats are
available, relieving you of the boat management and with meals and
accommodation provided and if you are looking for a Narrowboat
handling training course there are many provided from novice to
professional level qualifications.
These are complimented by river cruises, restaurant boats, party
boats, day hire and many other facilities.
Off the water the towpaths have also been renovated in a lot of areas
providing quiet and interesting routes for walkers, cyclists and
joggers. Holiday cottages can also be found on the waterside not to
mention the numerous Pubs and restaurants that benefit from boat the
water frontage and the holiday trade that comes with it.
One of the delights of a Narrowboat holiday is that they really do
force you to slow down and relax, there is not a lot of choice with a
top speed of just 3mph. At the same time you get a closer look at
nature ( the wildlife accepts the boats quite readily ) and you are
also immersed in the architectural heritage of the waterways, which
can be quite fascinating. Exercise is provided by locks … choose your
route according to the number you wish to work, which are also quite
sociable as you meet crews from other boats coming the other way etc,
who will be quite happy to share there experiences with you and tell
you about what is ahead.
Familiar Cities like Birmingham can take on a complete new light from
the waterways as you tour them away from the road traffic and you can
also moor for free for a couple of nights in the heart of a lot of
major cities, which is useful if perhaps a little strange.
If you have not already experienced the canals, take a look at the
waterways, you might be pleasantly surprised.
